Inviting You In: The Timeless Appeal of Lauren Hulbert's 'Honeydew'

“Honeydew” is this lovely track by Lauren Hulbert and it’s got an interesting backstory. She wrote it back in 2010, then she only recorded it in 2016 to finally put it on her Superbloom EP in 2020. She initially wrote it for her boyfriend when they were living in Ecuador. Despite their relationship being over, she still remembers how she felt during what we call the honeymoon phase. “Honeydew”, though, isn’t just about that one relationship; it’s about this state of being in love. The song has a chill acoustic vibe that makes you just want to spend time with your partner and enjoy the moment.

The music video for “Honeydew” came out on May 10th 2024. Lauren worked with videographer Wren Huxley and together they created this beautiful piece of work. They shot the whole video in Sebastopol, which is just an hour away from her old music scene in Oakland. The video starts with Lauren in a peaceful field on a perfect sunny day. But then, things get playful when these forest nymphs show up. Later on, there's this very cute scene where she's reading to a toddler dressed as a bee in a garden. It all ends with her meeting her soulmate on a dock by the lake. Originally, Lauren was just supposed to play the guitar, but thanks to some creative input from her friends, it turned into this fairytale-like story.

Lauren is known for her acoustic style and personal songwriting. She just moved to Nashville from Thousand Oaks and has been making music for over 17 years now. Her debut album, ‘Beneath the Soil’, came out in 2017 and it's full of songs she wrote and recorded over more than 10 years. Her songs deeply explore the human experience, with her hopes and fears being central to her writing. In 2020, she released her EP ‘Superbloom’ with the same formula where she shares bits of herself through simple and lovely melodies.

With “Honeydew,” Lauren Hulbert’really pulls you into her world. She mixes love and nostalgia and as a result she creates something timeless. What started as a personal love letter turned into a track people can relate to as she captures the little details of human relationships. As she keeps writing and performing, Lauren remains dedicated to sharing herself, her thoughts and feelings through music, making sure that her songs connect with people for years to come.
