Walking Through Past Love and Memory with Micae’s “Blackberries”
The song's origin is as poetic as the lyrics of the song itself. Prompted by a writing exercise from co-lyricist Claire Miller-Harder, Micae took a walk and collected images that reminded her of a love she still mourned. The quietness of observation yielded the lyrical landscape of "Blackberries," a song that is both intensely personal and highly universal. Micae tells the story behind the title: an old lover had once took her berry picking, and they had frozen their harvest into individual bags—one for each of them. But after they broke up, the berries remained in his freezer, a tiny but powerful symbol of love that had been left suspended in time.
Beyond her artistic output, Micae is a deeply thoughtful creator whose life blends music, healing, and education. Classically trained in voice for nearly two decades, she holds a Bachelor of Music Therapy and runs a private practice, InTandem Music Therapy, supporting neurodivergent youth through songwriting. Her work is as much about connection and self-expression as it is about melody and performance. Working toward a Master's in Education, Micae is studying how autistic students use technology to access education. The project is an extension of her ongoing commitment to accessibility and justice that drives her scholarly as well as artistic work.
"Blackberries" is a taste of what listeners can expect from her upcoming debut album, "It All Looks A Little Different Now.". The album will collect ideas of feminism, forgiveness, and raw emotion, all expressed in indie folk-rock style with a country edge. On the evidence of this single release, Micae comes across as an artist who accommodates sorrow and happiness with equal facility. In this delicate equipoise, she offers her listeners something wonderfully strange: songs that don't just convey emotions but comment on them too.
