Breaking Through the Noise: ESSA’s Raw Anthem of Survival
Anthems emerge from heart wounds and digital threads. With the assistance of UK guitarist Ronnie Nicholson and LA producer Mike McConaghy the song took cross contintent shape. The essence of the song was painstakingly sculpted in Portland, Maine’s quiet streets and the unblinking stare of producer Matthew Perry. ESSA’s remodeling of the song involved reclaiming the vocals, forging new lyrics and melodic structures which meant battling her demons which demanded a harmonious defeat. She transformed grit into melody, pain into verse.
Like the Deftones, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Evanescence, ESSA is not merely invoking rock’s phantoms; she is resurrecting them. With every shout, Peak of Poblado’s guitars wail and drums boom, while pianos lament. On top of it all, ESSA’s voice slices like a knife. ESSA does not emerge lost in a daze; she survives. In the shadow of losing her father in 2020 and enduring an injury that silenced her in 2024, ESSA was forced to grapple with grief that came in waves. Instead of allowing the pain to consume her, she transformed the darkness into a creative one.
More than just a single, "Give Me A Fuckin Break" is a battle cry forward. A sonic diary chronicling the fight to reclaim her life, fortified by rhythm, deep reflection, and unyielding intensity. An effortless fusion of poetic process and product, ESSA’s seamless transitions of beach walks, book soirees, all-nighter studio sessions, and intense soul-searching are works of artistry. The drop serves as a prologue to an album that is still in the works. This is only the beginning of a journey that will unravel deeper and louder sounds for all to relish in.
