When Childhood Becomes a "Ghost House": Introducing Lilia Asha
Some songs are penned in happiness, others in sorrow—but Ghost House was written on a day of deep remembrance. Lilia Asha was just twelve years old when she sat with her guitar and sadness and wrote the song on the day of her grandpa's funeral. She was in Shanghai, and the farewell was on the other side of the world in the UK, but memory bridged the gap. His house, her kingdom in childhood, was now a house frozen in time—its laughter and warmth now memory. Ghost House was her trying to honor him, a memorial stitched together with love, loss, and the fragile magic of childhood recollection.
Lilia did not work alone in producing this track. Her producer, Vitalii Kuzovkov, collaborated with her to take the song to its most fully realized form, weaving in extraterrestrial layers to its sound. The song shines with ethereal textures but still has an alt-pop heartbeat, making it haunting and yet familiar. There is also a version that currently only lives in her head—a stripped-down ballad, stripped down to its bones—that she would love to share one day. And yet in its current form, Ghost House carries the weight of memory like a lantern shining bright in the darkness.
Billie Eilish has been a guiding light for Lilia for a long time—her voice, her bravery as an artist, her manner of creating music that is both confession and revolution. Although Ghost House is Lilia's story, she carried some of that energy with her: the quiet, the soft whisper that becomes a scream in the soul of the listener. It's not just a song to her—but to everyone who's ever lost someone, and to all those who hold a space inside where memories continue to breathe.
Lilia Asha's journey as a performer has already taken her to unexpected stages—from standing under the grand lights of the Sydney Opera House at ten, to returning again and again to stages in Shanghai, to the vibrant classrooms of the Brit School and Song Academy camps in the UK. Each performance, each song written (and there are nearly a hundred waiting their turn), feels like a stepping stone. Ghost House is only her second record, but it contains her heart's oldest story. And if you listen close, you can find pieces of your own story there too.
