EP1: Eva Pagán’s Electropop Journey Between Cultures and Sound

Eva Pagán is kicked off a new chapter with her first EP, titled EP1, released on Nov.28th on Too Lost Records. More than just an introduction, this record has all the makings of an identity statement. Having previously recorded music as Eva Westphal, this new persona feels far more distinctive. Drawing from experience in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, this record marks her entry not as a newcomer to the scene, but rather an artist carving out her niche in electropop.

The EP begins with “Far,” and this song establishes right from the start what this EP is about emotionally. This song is catchy and thoughtful, veering from melancholic undertones to warmth, with vocals that are both intimate and weightless. The vocalist also sports an airy quality that lessens the weight of the longing in this song, so it lingers rather than weighing on one’s heart. As the title track, “Far” is clearly the thesis statement of this EP—that one should be able to capture distance not only in geography, but also in emotion.

“Til I Die” abruptly changes the dynamics, showcasing another facet of the artistry that Pagán possesses. The song embraces the club music vibe, highlighted by the experimental beat that has UK garage influences. It has a playfully bold sound that exudes undeniable hook potential, creating the effect of preventing the EP from being in one mood all the way through.

The final stretch, with tracks such as "In the Mirror" and "4ever," is where her Latin upbringing comes into sharp focus. Via rhythm, production, and linguistic expression, Pagán boldly celebrates her cultural heritage by incorporating Spanglish seamlessly into her work. As quoted, EP1 is a love letter to her immigrant parents: a work of art that honors and promotes her cultural heritage instead of simply abandoning it. Now with an established following and various accolades, EP1 is no longer an introductory work but instead a harbinger of what is to come for singer-songwriter Eva Pagán.
