Inside the Loop: Almost Morning Releases Her Debut EP "Halfen"

New York electronic music artist almost morning released her second single, “talk to you,” which was significant in the build-up to her debut EP "halfen". Based out of New York City, Almost Morning continues to work on her sonic aesthetic that is deeply connected with the ideas of minimalism and emotionalism. As described by the artist herself, “talk to you” is the emotional core of her debut EP, an exploration of the stark atmosphere established in her previous work but pushing it into darker territory.

Throughout the EP, her production style is unmistakably modern and innovative. She treats her vocals in such a way, using effects, distortion, and texture, so that it is difficult to distinguish between vocal and instrumentation. The tracks, despite being an experimental process, are melodic, often aided by subtle hooks that emerge through the fog. The overall aesthetic is ethereal, both airy and dense, intimate and removed, in such a way that it feels like it is floating on air. The work finally comes to a close with “wake.”

“talk to you” is centered around an earworm vocal hook with heavy sub-bass; the track combines elements of experimental club music, art pop, and downtempo electronica. As opposed to building up tension through climaxing instrumentation, almost morning instead uses repetition, space, and minimalism. At the core of the track is the emotional state of shutdown—being unable to reach out, respond, or even check in with oneself. Rather than exaggerating the situation through instrumentation, almost morning instead uses the rhythm and space of the track to become the embodiment of emotional shutdown.

The song was created and self-produced in her New York home studio during a time of burnout in 2024. This gives us insight into the level of intensity in this song. It has little percussion, and there are vocals that are submerged and repetitive. This gives us something that feels unresolved and suspended. It does not feel like it was created with catharsis in mind. It feels dark, stripped back, and controlled.

While “let it” was almost morning’s first single, showcasing her use of low-end frequencies, repetition, and vocals, “talk to you” shows her further developing as an artist. If you are familiar with artists such as Sega Bodega, Arca, and Rosalía, then you might recognize this dichotomy between vulnerability and control. This EP shows almost morning as a force to be reckoned with in the alt-electronic and experimental pop world.
