Naomi Campbell’s Soulful Evolution: ‘Don’t You Mind’ Marks a New Era

In 2021, Naomi Campbell started something totally new with this project called Tin Can Voodoo’. It came from her love of classic Blues, Rock, R&B, and Soul. Every Wednesday night, she’d perform with a full band, singing incredible songs by legends like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Bobbie Gentry. It was a big shift from her usual Americana and Folk style, but it pushed her to explore this grittier and more emotional side of music. The experience impacted her performances and it even started to reshape her songwriting into something more dynamic and soulful.

Naomi’s new single, Don’t You Mind’, is an example of how her music has evolved. It’s this heartfelt song about leaning on someone you trust to go through life’s challenges. She wrote it in September last year, and it’s got the emotional depth of Soul music while still staying true to her storytelling roots. She recorded two versions—one acoustic at the Sun Studio in Memphis and another full-band version at Liverpool’s Motor Museum studio. Don’t You Mind’ combines the warmth of Americana with the raw energy of Soul music.

Naomi’s from rural Ireland, so her music originally leaned heavily into Folk and Americana. But since moving to Liverpool and working with a full band, her style has really expanded. Over the past year, she’s been gigging in the UK, even supporting artists like Chris Helme from The Seahorses and John Calvin Abney. With her 2024 releases, Tuesday’s News and This is Gold, Naomi managed to established herself as a new voice in the folk-soul hybrid genre.

The release of Don’t You Mind’ is an important milestone in Naomi’s career. It shows how effotlessly she blends different genres with her powerful voice and emotional songwriting at the center of it all. You can tell the song comes from everything she’s learned through her Tin Can Voodoo project as the track feels deeply personal but still is something anyone can connect to. As Campbell continues to evolve, Don’t You Mind’ shows her ability to draw from the past while creating her own unique sound. With this release, she solidifies her place as one of the most exciting emerging artists in the Folk and Soul scene.
