"California Fields": Michellar’s Haunting Ode to the Golden State

Born from the heart of San Francisco, Michellar's debut single "California Fields" is a personal ode to a place that has shaped her life for over two decades.  it’s a soulful tribute to a place that has shaped her life for over two decades. A 20-year California resident, Michellar translates her complex emotions—loving and conflicted—to create a song that moves hearts. From her life and the world around her, this song came from a songwriting exercise, growing from a basic acoustic concept to the full, Latin-inspired song that it has become through the production of Lloyd Miller at Spirit Song Studios in Austin, Texas.

“California Fields,” delves into the tenuous balance of beauty and destruction in the Golden State. Penned during a period when wildfires swept through Northern California, Michellar's lyrics convey her anxiety for what is to come, resonating with the emotional fallout of loss and change. The song is a lyrical thought-provoking commentary on global warming, recalling in essence to Kansas's classic "Hotel California." The song was recorded at the Women's Audio Mission studio and is of particular note as her very first experience in a professional recording studio—one that helped pave the way for her fledgling musical career.

The most beautiful thing about this song is the way it is able to take listeners to the world of Michellar, where love for a place is mixed with uncertainty and fear. Her exposed, emotive voice is taken to new levels by the Latin rhythms pulsing with life, a reference to her half Spanish roots and her increased alignment with the genre. Production turns acoustic roots into an otherworldly yet earthy soundscape. It's a testament to music's power as a healing force, a storytelling medium, and a force for transformation.

Since this emotional introduction, Michellar has never looked back—she's put out 19 additional singles in a variety of styles, refusing to be pinned down to one specific sound. With a new Latin-infused EP in the works, she's continuing to push herself and her music, taking a cue from legends like David Bowie by stepping outside of her comfort zone. Michellar's development is such as a seed pushing through hard earth—driven, determined, and stretching further and further upwards. "California Fields" is the start of a journey that holds the promise of solid roots and wide branches.
