"In My Eyes": Ula’s Tender Dance with Vulnerability
There's a kind of magic in vulnerability—the kind that's half-terrifying and liberating. Ula plunges headfirst into that with her latest release, In My Eyes, a track that cloaks itself in warmth while softly brimming with naked emotion. It's the sound of synths spilling across the cityscape, whispered resilience disguised in vulnerability. Following the success of her first release So Kind—a "confident and creatively assured" debut—this second solo single sends her career soaring to a warped, if vulnerable, pop realm.
The song itself was a concept born not of overthinking, but of instinct. Written during the quiet hours of a Viennese basement with longtime collaborator Tim Burghaus, In My Eyes was written in under two hours—a process so natural it feels destined to be. That sense of urgency translates to the music: graceful yet sprawling, sprawling yet hopeful. The song holds its audience near, wrapping them in thorns of synth and whispery, soft vocal tones that quiver with real feeling.
Ula's music is predicated on this tension of familiar and unfamiliar comfort. Taking a cue from the avant-pop gloss of St. Vincent, the haunting pop of Aurora, and Allie X's uncompromising experimentation, she occupies a space where comfort and discomfort are equalized. It's in this balance that she is most distinctive—a pop sensibility with an undercurrent of the uncanny, encouraging the listener to remain in their own emotion, however unsteady.
Her story, too, is one of the same courage. From Poland to the UK at 17 to study at The BRIT School, Ula battled her way into the world through determination and talent, fronting prog-pop group Tenacity and playing in nearly 70 London clubs. Now stepping into the forefront as a solo producer, studio engineer, and composer, she's preparing to release a debut EP of vision and vulnerability. In In My Eyes, Ula is not performing a song—she is opening the door and inviting us in for a moment of awkward sweet reality.
