Naomi Neva’s “This Is Over”: A Raw Anthem for the Beautifully Unfinished
"From the buzz of Oakland's vibrant undertone comes Naomi Neva, indie rock's newest truth-teller with distortion pedals and a wounded heart. With her new single "This Is Over", Naomi channels her lightning-in-a-bottle moment, releasing her fury and beauty onto record with Hear Me Roar Studio's all-female production team. "This Is Over" is more than a song-it's a declaration. It's a scream. Naomi's raw vocals and fuzz-drenched guitars meet with a chorus that feels like the moment you finally walk away — or at least try to.
"That's a lie," Naomi says about the song, half-joking half-confessing. “I’m still friends with both of the people who inspired it — and that’s still a mistake.” She wrote it on a plane going from Berlin to the Bay with nothing but silence in her heart and a mind full of words spilling out. It was between these folks, these strangers, handing out snacks. She scribbled all this out in her journal. And that's what she got: a song that's like freedom bursting wide open. Messy. Beautiful. It's also her first collaboration with a record label.
Naomi Naomi's original demo was in the hands of Hear Me Roar's Kimberley Shires, and straight away, it felt like one of those auspicious, lightning-strike matches: There was something punk in it, a dodgy Ani DiFranco moment of rebellion, and then both Kimberley and Naomi crafted it into this raw thing. This song flicks between these pain and empowerment zones recalling JOB Harvey and a juicy admissions insight courtesy of Olivia Rodrigo. It is heartbreak turned to weapon, with compassion.
Naomi Neva's is a song in progress-from lullabies in her childhood to her teenaged anthems given full vent to by punk rock, and finally full circle to a voice that's fire and earth. When she had her child, she found her way back to the music-not out of some need to escape but out of a need to reclaim. Much more than a breakup song, "This Is Over" is a reminder that goodbyes sometimes have songs within them.
