Step Into the Night with VASILIKÍ’s New Single ‘Alice’
The electronic pop music of New York is shining brighter today. VASILIKÍ, a Greek-born artist currently based out of New York, has dropped her debut single, ‘Alice,’ which is dark, infectious, and combines euphoria found in club life and real, honest, and intense emotion. "Alice" is a representation of the woman who is loved for radiating light but also struggles with understanding and feeling what the world thinks it knows and feels about her. Starting with the first synths, it is a song that brings mesmerizing beats, cool electronic elements, and smooth vocals.
VASILIKÍ paints Alice as a confident, sensual, and bold woman—but also a woman of secrets and deep emotion. Very telling are such lyrics as ‘Leopard print high heels with a cherry on top / Body covered in silk, she’s someone’s angel’ when it speaks of a woman who radiates brightness but on whom the dark spots are never noticed. "Women are put on pedestals and then blamed for falling off. They are appreciated and misunderstood at the same time," VASILIKÍ adds.
Yet, in spite of the profundity of the messages, "Alice" is intended to encourage you to move. VASILIKÍ has produced the song as a lifting, dancing anthem: "a sad, unsettling but…something you keep dancing to with a smile on your face, all sweaty and happy." Influenced by memories of her youthful dancing exploits on the club circuit in Athens, such ecstasy is distilled into every bar. "Whispers of Greek words, Anapse ta fota kai dwse / Einai athistikos aftos o rithmos" ("Turn on the lights and start dancing / This rhythm is addictive") at the end, are a tribute to VASILIKÍ’s homeland and source.
VASILIKÍ’s artistic talent extends far beyond music. Raised and based out of Athens, VASILIKÍ herself returned to NYC at the tender age of nineteen to follow a passion for the performing arts, and has been cultivating a retro-inspired, vintage-centric aesthetic thanks to the last sixty years of art, music, and fashion.
