“Sailors”: Shelita’s Oceanic Love Anthem From Into the Depths
Essentially, “Sailors” is anchored by Shelita’s expressive vocals, both soft and strong in their delivery of rich melodies and a flow that reminds listeners of waves. This track is about the emotional journey of riding through a turbulent situation, letting go when one must, yet having faith that, like the waves, love finds a way of returning. It reinforces themes of water and healing that can be heard throughout the whole EP.
Those themes are very personal. Shelita’s life was forever changed by a skydiving accident in the Seychelles. This was followed by surgeries, isolation and a long recovery. It was a time when the ocean and music became very important to her. Freediving gave her a sense of liberty again, music reinforced her understanding of the power of vibrations, and a new series of work was born from a place of strength, love, and clarity.
Having already garnered recognition from top media outlets such as EarMilk, NPR, Billboard, and Forbes, Shelita approached her new release with the mindset of one who has experienced great transformation in life. She draws on influences from Africa, Europe, South America, and the U.S. in a work that addresses the concepts of love, healing, and consciousness on a worldwide stage. She's showing how difficulties can be turned into beauty, how music can unite the world, but also how the human spirit can overcome adversity once again.
