Late-Night Acceptance: nównøis Reimagines “incomplete (in the Shinobu Version)"

nównøis returns with her single “incomplete (the shinobu version). This is the artist's reinterpretation of her original track which creates a different emotional landscape, perhaps slightly more subdued and possibly more suited to a night time setting. The music is minimalist, yet the drumming is strong, the bass rich, and there is space. This creates a good setting for the almost whispered vocals.

Rather than working towards an emotional crescendo, it is a slow build, which creates a night time listen of the crossbreeding of alternative R&B and trip-hop. It is more of an emotional re-creation of the original, rather than a remix. “incomplete (the shinobu version)” creates a version of the song as an exercise in acceptance rather than confrontation, tension simmering rather than building towards a crescendo. The subject matter of the song is about losing balance in order to stay grounded, which is emotional self-awareness.

nównøis has taken the main theme of the song and tackled it from a more introspective place, taking herself away from the more intense level of emotional depth that is often evident in the artist's discography. The structure of the song has been altered to accommodate the change of pace, and decisions have been made to ensure the more subtle aspects of the sound are given more prominence.

As the release of the EP1•verses continues to be seen throughout the streaming platforms, “incomplete (the shinobu version)” feels like it has found its place in the world. Whilst it is part of a greater storyline, it stands as a separate entity, a well-crafted exploration of the emotional and the ambient. The slow pace of the song, which has the feel of the calm of getting home alone after a night out, highlights the artist's skill in crafting the intimate, detailed electronic soundscape.
