Magenta Ray: A Love Story Told Through Music
There’s something undeniably powerful about making music with the person you love. This special connection is what Magenta Ray is all about. Lisa Hart, singer-songwriter, and Mark Larson, her partner, co-founder, and composer Mark Larson , built a life based on creativity, strong emotions, and love over a course of ten years together. Their latest single "A Kiss Like This" is an example of one of the most exciting and magical moments when physical desire, spiritual connection, and love meet each other in an explosive combination—a feeling of a first kiss when a lot of things will never be the same again.
Magenta Ray's sound is not easy to define and classify and it was done deliberately. Lisa and Mark had different musical backgrounds but found a common language experimenting with sounds. "A Kiss Like This" is a perfect example of the unique blend of powerful alternative rock, dark and mysterious electronic atmosphere and Lisa's voice full of emotions. Fans of Garbage, The Pretenders, Portishead, Massive Attack, Sneaker Pimps, Poe, and PJ Harvey may recognize some familiar emotional territory, but Magenta Ray has shaped those influences into something distinctly their own.
The song came about during the pandemic lockdown, an incredibly difficult time for many but unexpectedly beautiful for Lisa and Mark. Spending more time together made them get into a state of creative heaven in making music inspired by the connection they have as a couple. “A Kiss Like This” came out rather easily, powered by the magic of meeting your soulmate as well as by the emotion behind being vulnerable and anticipating for it. The recording session took place in their private home studio—the very home where Mark grew up in Napa Valley. The studio was personally built by Mark and his family members and served as a creative space where the couple could experiment with hypnotic guitar layers, dark synths, and Lisa’s vocals.
For Magenta Ray, music is about more than creating a mood—it is about transformation. Their guiding phrase, “Bringing the darkness into the light,” captures the philosophy behind their work, particularly Lisa’s deeply personal lyrics, which draw on her lifelong path of healing and self-discovery. “A Kiss Like This” is a celebration of passion, connection, and the electricity of love, but it is also part of something bigger. After memorable performances at venues including Blue Note Napa and JAM Cellars Ballroom, the duo is looking ahead to a performance at The Garden in downtown Napa on October 10 at 8 p.m., with a special record-release show also in the works for this fall. With new music and visual projects on the horizon, Magenta Ray is stepping into an exciting new chapter—bringing their dark, immersive sound into the light and inviting listeners along for the ride.
