Lana Karlay Turns Heartbreak Into Pop-Rock Fire on ‘Cross Your Mind’
Heartbreak is one of those feelings which sticks around even when the relationship is over, in the constant overthinking and making excuses for why he/she left you, in the unanswered questions, and the ever-present hope that someday they would realize their mistake. Geelong-based artist Lana Karlay has taken the entire emotional turmoil and created music which is impossible to ignore and catchy in its melodic beauty with her latest song, 'Cross Your Mind', released on Friday September 11th through GYRO records. The track starts deceptively soft, with Lana’s dreamy vocals drawing you in before the guitar makes its entry to rock your world with powerful drums and instrumentation.
The strength of "Cross Your Mind" lies in its realization that walking away is not always a glorious and cinematic moment. Walking away can be as simple as finally realizing that you're tired of dragging the relationship along with you. Lana dives deep into the feeling of imbalance - the constant analysing, fixing and making excuses for someone who only seems to remember you when it suits them. The track takes its title from the lyric "I have to cross you to cross your mind," and this phrase becomes the crux of the entire song: sometimes disappearing from someone's life is the only way to make them notice your absence.
Music-wise, this feels like Lana drawing a line in the sand. On previous releases, she has shown her range and willingness to experiment with various music styles; however, ‘Cross Your Mind’ marks the beginning of Lana’s complete dedication to pop-rock. Written and produced with brothers Mason & Julez and mastered by Mark Parfitt, who has previously worked with artists like Justin Bieber, Kehlani and Meghan Trainor, this track sounds like an artist beginning to lock into her own identity. This evolution can be seen not only on studio tracks – Lana recently performed a support set for Darcie Haven at a new Geelong venue, CHURCH.
There is already plenty of evidence that people are paying attention. The high school student has racked up more than 41,000 monthly Spotify listeners, passed 1,000 radio plays and landed features in Total Girl and IT GIRL magazines. She has also picked up a Top 12 finalist spot in the Unsigned Only 2026 Teen Category and a semi-finalist position for the American Songwriter Road Ready 2026 Award. But statistics only tell part of the story. ‘Cross Your Mind’ is where the more interesting story begins: a young artist taking the confusion, frustration and bruised pride of a failed connection and turning it into something with teeth. If this is Lana Karlay finding her sound, she has found one worth turning up loud.
